Following the conclusion of the critical care rotation, a paper discussing the use of omega-3 fatty acids in parenteral nutrition lipid emulsions was assigned. To complete this assignment, I researched the latest data regarding the efficacy of parenteral nutrition lipid emulsions, specifically those employing the use of omega-3 fatty acids. Researching the literature for this paper was both exciting and rewarding as this is an emerging area of dietetics research. Much of the data were from clinical trials that took place in Europe where the use of omega-3 fatty acid enhanced lipid emulsions is deemed safe and efficacious. Although I was able to find a substantial amount of research in this topic area, I was unable to derive a conclusion for my paper as the clinical trials were not standardized regarding lipid ratios, dosage amounts, and length of study time. In addition, many trials had small sample sizes and were unable to extend their results to the general population. Although I was not able to derive any specific recommendations, all of the research I obtained stated that the use of omega-3 fatty acids in parenteral nutrition lipid emulsions did not always prove beneficial; however, its use was not harmful.
In addition to completing the paper, a presentational overview of my research given to the dietitians at Grady Memorial Hospital was required. For this presentation, my research partner and I met together to create the presentation. In preparing the presentation, we sorted through both of our individual papers on this topic and decided to present the highlights of our research to the dietitians via a powerpoint presentation. Overall, the paper and presentation went very well and I received a satisfactory completion for both. During the presentation, the dietitians seemed interested in our research and asked several questions afterward. Also, my research partner and I prepared evaluation forms to be completed after the presentation and based upon the analysis of the evaluations, we were successful in conveying our findings to the group.
Completing these assignments enabled me to achieve learning outcome one through researching a current topic in nutrition and delivering my findings not only in written form but also verbally. This gave me the opportunity to use my current research skills while developing these skills further, practice expressing myself and the research in a clear and concise manner through the paper, and further my public speaking skills by presenting the research to a group of professional dietitians. As a future professional, I will undoubtedly be expected to stay abreast of current research in the field of dietetics as well as be able to critically evaluate that research whether it is through writing or a verbal presentation.
I enjoyed the process of researching this particular topic and reading the various articles I was able to find on the subject as the use of omega-3 fatty acids is a hot topic, especially in critical care situations. Through this process I learned that literature research can be both rewarding and pleasurable, especially when I am able to pick the topic. Additionally, I enjoyed presenting the research with a partner though we did not write our papers together. Although I am considerably comfortable making presentations, this was my first presentation to a group of dietitians, which made me nervous. Having my partner there made me feel more comfortable during the presentation as we have always worked well together both during undergraduate and graduate assignments. Completing the critical care rotation and research paper/presentation allowed me to discover that I enjoy this particular field of dietetics and may wish to work in critical care in the future. Presenting my research to the dietitians gave me confidence in my abilities to not only find information but also relay it in a way conducive to learning and discussion prompting.
